On March 26 at 11:20 A.M., Rescue Company 2 was special called to Staten Island to assist Rescue Company 5 at multiple car accident on the Gothels Bridge. Four tractor-trailers were involved. One was carrying 6,000 gallons of liquid oxygen another with chemicals and radioactive material and another with a live entrapment. Both Rescues operated for 6 hours, stabilized the vehicles using struts and wood cribbing, removed one truck driver with the Hurst Tool(who survived), & secured the liquid oxygen truck preventing a spill that would have resulted in the loss of the bridge.

On June 2, 2004 Rescue Company 2 was special called to Kings County Hospital to assist in the operating room. A woman involved in a vehicle accident had a 1¼” pipe through her chest dangerously close to her heart. Three members, wearing operating room gowns and masks, worked on her in the operating room. The pipe was cut using a portable band saw and removed by the doctors. The woman survived.

Also, on June 2, 2004, Rescue Company 2 responded to a signal 10-77 for a residential high-rise fire. The fire on the 22nd floor created conditions on the 23rd floor that were untenable. One occupant was driven out of his apartment to scale the outside of the building to the roof. Rescue 2’s Fr. Tavella was lowered from the roof performing a life saving rope operation saving the remaining 5 people in the apartment.

On June 4, 1998 Rescue Company 2 was special called from the scene of a 2 alarm on Varick Street with members down from an acetylene tank explosion. To a 5 alarm with members trapped in a collapse on Atlantic Avenue box 5-5-2044. Rescue 2 arrived to find heavy fire on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, floors of a three-story frame building in a row of three story frames. Five members had fallen in the collapse of the second floor into the first floor vacant store. Three remained trapped within the burning debris. With the constant threat of a secondary collapse Rescue Co 2 dug the trapped members out while fire was all around them. Unfortunately, Lieut. James Blackmore succumbed to his injuries as did Captain Scott LaPeidra who was removed prior to the company’s arrival.
